Werder Bremen hesitating in sealing deal for Isaac Schmidt

Bundesliga club Werder Bremen may not launch a bid to sign 25-year-old Swiss international Isaac Schmidt from Leeds United in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Bild, as relayed by Sport Witness, Isaac Schmidt is the subject of interest from Werder Bremen. The River Islanders have been keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a right-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 25-year-old Leeds United wide player has been a target for the Bundesliga outfit.

However, with Yukinari Sugawara recently joining Werder Bremen from Southampton, Horst Steffen has a stacked full-back unit, with Maximilian Wober also capable of playing in a wide role. So, a move for Schmidt may not see the light of day, with the Bundesliga outfit hesitant to launch a move to secure his signature in the final days of the summer transfer window.

Isaac Schmidt and his situation

Isaac Schmidt is already at a crossroads in his career despite joining Leeds United from FC St. Gallen last summer. The Lausanne spent his formative years in Switzerland, graduating from the youth division at Lausanne-Sport. However, the 25-year-old landed on his feet during his spell with FC St. Gallen.

Meanwhile, the move to Leeds United has not worked as well as he would have liked, as the Swiss international has managed only 251 minutes of game time across 14 appearances thus far for the West Yorkshire outfit. Schmidt has no future at Leeds United, with the newly promoted Premier League club ready to part ways with him only one year after signing him from FC St. Gallen.

What next?

Widespread reports have heavily linked Isaac Schmidt with Werder Bremen, and there has been a belief at Leeds United that the Lausanne native will depart from Elland Road in the summer transfer window. However, the transfer is now “in jeopardy” after the Bundesliga club signed Yukinari Sugawara from Southampton.

Horst Steffen now has a stacked full-back unit, with Maximilian Wober, a centre-back, also capable of playing in a wide role. So, a move for Schmidt may not materialise, with Werder Bremen hesitant to launch a move to secure his signature in the final days of the summer transfer window.

Nevertheless, Leeds United may have a busy few days until Monday’s transfer deadline with the outgoing business, with Largie Ramazani also closing in on leaving amid his links with Valencia. It will be interesting to see what the future holds Schmidt, with the 25-year-old Swiss international unlikely to join Werder Bremen.
