From hired to fired in over a month: Gent sack head coach Danijel Milicevic just weeks after giving him the role permanently
Gent have performed a full U-turn on their decision to hire Danijel Milicevic. The club had given him the position on a permanent basis after an interim period following the sacking of Wouter Vrancken. This decision came just before the play-offs, which were then a complete disaster for Gent as they only picked up three points out of 10 matches. Gent have now changed their mind and decided to remove Milicevic from his role as head coach.
In many ways, this decision is a microcosm for Gent’s approach in the past 12 or so months. Prior to the 2023/2024 season the side looked primed for a title challenge, with a number of quality players and depth. However, they blew the team up that January by selling a number of key players after the season had not gone as planned. They did manage to qualify for European football and the idea had been to then reinvest and push again this year. However, the signings have not come off and the side have ended up with no European football next season.
This summer will once again be one for rebuilding, with a number of issues needing to be addressed, while a number of players are also expected to leave.
