Mikel Arteta Slams Lewis-Skelly Red Card as Arsenal Edge Wolves in Controversial Clash

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his outrage following Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card in their 1-0 Premier League victory over Wolves at Molineux. Referee Michael Oliver dismissed the 18-year-old defender just before halftime for a challenge on Matt Doherty near Wolves' penalty area, leaving Arsenal's players visibly shocked.

Despite the setback, Arsenal managed to secure all three points, with Wolves also reduced to ten men after Joao Gomes received two yellow cards.

Arteta's Reaction

Arteta did not mince words when addressing the incident post-match. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said, “It is that clear that I leave it to you guys. I am absolutely fuming, but I leave it with you because it is that obvious. I don't think my words are going to help."

When asked if he had received an explanation from the officials or whether Arsenal would appeal the decision, Arteta suggested that the Football Association (FA) should overturn the red card. “That's for the club to decide, but I think it's so obvious that maybe we don't even need to appeal,” he added.

Player Support

Goalscorer Riccardo Calafiori also defended Lewis-Skelly, stating, “From the bench, it was clearly not a red card. He was disappointed at halftime, but we won, so nothing happened. He’s a great footballer and a great guy, and we’ll support him fully.”

Looking Ahead

The Gunners now turn their attention to a crucial Champions League clash against Girona on Wednesday, needing just a draw to secure qualification for the knockout stages. Following that, Arsenal will host Manchester City on Sunday before facing Newcastle in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg, where they trail 2-0 on aggregate.

This victory, while critical for Arsenal’s Premier League campaign, leaves questions about officiating standards and potential action by the FA to address the contentious red card.
