Real Madrid star replaces Cristiano Ronaldo as Portugal captain

A member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid has this week been named his country’s new national team captain.

The Blancos star in question? Bernardo Silva.

Bernardo’s Portugal are of course in the midst of an altogether significant week to date. After months of drama and speculation, Cristiano Ronaldo finally made the definitive call to call time on his international career.

Jorge Jesus was therefore left with the task of appointing a new captain and leader for his squad. And as alluded to above, the player ultimately chosen to replace Ronaldo comes in the form of Bernardo Silva.

Jesus on Friday explained that his new skipper would be appointed based on seniority, to the player with the most caps. With Bernardo’s 115 appearances for Portugal more than any of his compatriots, the Real Madrid summer signing was therefore handed the captain’s armband with immediate effect.
