Napoli CEO Aurelio de Laurentiis reveals he won’t be selling club
Serie A side Napoli have been linked with a possible in recent weeks, amidst speculation that CEO Aurelio de Laurentiis is eyeing suitors. But the Italian has now revealed that he isn’t considering the club’s sale.
The club’s owner spoke to Radio Kiss Kiss and he addressed the larger uncertainties around Napoli in what was a detailed interview.
De Laurentiis noted that discussions did take with Rizzetta rather informally but talks date back to last year and nothing happened recently.
He said – via Gazzetta dello Sport: “About a year ago, I received a meeting request from Rizzetta, whom I didn’t know. Out of politeness, I responded,”
He further indicated that talks were held but no due diligence was done to reach an agreement.
He also noted why he doesn’t want to move on and the discussions with Rizzetta never took off due to those reasons.
“First, I was told I would be in charge, eventually reducing this role and eventually becoming honorary president.”
“I asked for guarantees to continue this work after 22 years in the company. I had a duty to Napoli fans around the world.”
He also opened up that there were discussions were stakeholders from the Middle East too but the same reason held up the move.
“The Arabs wanted to offer me €3.5 billion, but I didn’t want to retire.”
Owner possibly seeking offers
This is probably De Laurentiis’ way of making it clear that if owners do step forward for Napoli, they’d have to give him a prominent role.
Besides, Napoli have probably reached the peak of their valuation, unless there are huge developments around a stadium. Since that hasn’t happened, it is clear that if something right moves and he is handed the right role, De Laurentiis won’t mind a sale.
