Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has opened up on what the Red Devils must do to get out of the JJ Gabriel transfer saga.

Manchester United must avoid looking weak amid the uncertainty surrounding academy wonderkid JJ Gabriel’s future, or risk setting a precedent for other highly rated youngsters, Rio Ferdinand has warned while speaking on his YouTube channel.

Gabriel is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents to emerge from United’s academy, but his future has become uncertain after his camp requested that he be de-registered from the club.

The teenager turns 16 on October 6, when he will be able to appoint an official agent and, because he holds an EU passport, sign for an overseas club. Barcelona and Real Madrid are reportedly among the sides expected to show interest. Both Spanish giants have a track record of snapping up top talent.

Rio Ferdinand on JJ Gabriel’s exceptional talent

Rio Ferdinand has watched Gabriel closely and believes the youngster possesses extraordinary potential, although he also stressed that there are questions surrounding the reasons behind his desire to leave.

“First and foremost, what a talent this kid is,” Ferdinand said before adding, “I don’t know where this kid’s ceiling is. I’ve seen him play, I’ve seen him train, I’ve listened to people who have coached him for a number of years and there’s no doubt this kid is going to the top.”

The former United defender also urged people to understand that Gabriel’s decision may not have been made by the youngster alone.

“I think we need to understand the reasons why he wants to leave the club. It’s not a 15-year-old making this call on his own, his family may have their reasons why,” Ferdinand explained.

He suggested first-team expectations may have contributed to the situation.

“Are they being impatient, are they thinking he should have got minutes already, were they promised stuff and now they’re disgruntled?”

Gabriel has already trained with Manchester United’s senior squad and made a major impact at youth level. He scored 26 goals and provided four assists in 29 appearances last season, before beginning the current campaign with five goals and two assists in three outings.

Manchester United cannot be bullied by Gabriel

Ferdinand recalled seeing Gabriel train alongside Bruno Fernandes, the PFA Player of the Year, which shows how advanced his development is. However, he believes Manchester United must protect the club’s position regardless of how highly Gabriel is rated.

“But Manchester United can’t be seen to be bullied by a 15-year-old, no matter how good he is. So whatever the outcome, Manchester United have to remain strong in this,” he said.

“There will be other kids using this as a reference point so you can’t be seen to be weak as a football club. But, I reiterate, I don’t know the full facts and I would love to.”

Ferdinand’s warning underscores a deeper shift in academy politics: as youth players gain global mobility at 16, clubs must balance institutional authority with genuine player development.
