Olivier Giroud (39) will turn 40 on Wednesday and the Lille OSC forward has said that this season is “most probably” his last as a professional football player.

Giroud has had quite the career. It was during Montpellier HSC’s shock title-winning season that he broke through before making the move to Arsenal. After six years at the Emirates Stadium, he made the switch across the capital to join Chelsea, whilst he has also played for the likes of AC Milan, LAFC. He currently plays for LOSC. His return to France was treated with great fanfare, and even now, over a year after his return to L’Héxagone, he is often applauded by opposition fans.

Giroud leaves quite the legacy, having, for a time, held the title of France’s all-time top scorer. His total was bettered by Kylian Mbappé earlier this year. So far this season, he has featured on six occasions in all competitions, scoring once. He will want to finish on a high, with this season “most likely” his last, as he told L’Équipe.

“We can have interviews with L’Équipe next year, with pleasure, but, as a player, I think that this is most probably my last season. That is why I am making the most of every moment,” he said. Giroud will look to add to his tally of 303 goals in 806 games at club level before then. However, he will not add to his 57 goals in 137 games for Les Bleus.
