What is behind Paulo Dybala’s impressive start to the season at Roma
Paulo Dybala has been in glittering form for Serie A side Roma this season. The numbers show that but it is quite evident La Joya is enjoying himself, as he seems to have adapted well to Gian Piero Gasperini’s system too.
Until last season, there were growing doubts over whether the Argentine would even fit into the Italian’s ways. It demands a high workrate and an intensity which is rare to see in the Serie A even today. Injuries were picking up for Dybala anyway, as he was being haunted by constant muscle worries.
But now, he has four assists in five league games. He could’ve easily had seven too, if Donyell Malen hadn’t missed well setup goals in those games too. But the Dutchman has formed a terrific partnership with Dybala, who is slowly developing a metronomic relationship with the attacker.
This has been key, as the Argentine has always wanted a thriving attacker to make sure someone gets at the end of his passes. Malen offers pace and a constant, ruthless ability to dart forward when needed.
But beyond that, Corriere dello Sport indicate that Dybala has done significant work on his fitness.
He has been actively pursuing pilates, which has been a help. More than that, he has been working exclusively with athletic trainer Professor Alessandro Pilati, who arrived in Rome after a 22-year-long spell at Genoa. This has proved revolutionary, as Dybala has looked fitter and more mobile.
Tactically, he is focusing more on creation than shooting, as numbers suggest. He is having to focus on his strengths of receiving, threading the right passes, picking out the runs around him and simply do what he does best.
In a nutshell, fans are getting to see Dybala enjoy the game for what could be his last few years at the highest level. And it is clearly turning out to be quite a watch.
