Time has passed, but the pill remains difficult to swallow. Just over two months after France were knocked out by Spain (2-0) in the World Cup semi-finals, the reasons behind Les Bleus’ failure have yet to be fully uncovered.

Speaking at a press conference on the eve of their Nations League opener against Turkey, Adrien Rabiot (31) gave his take on the event. “As for Spain, it wasn’t a lack of quality. We’re no less talented than that team, in all humility,” said the midfielder. For him, the difference lay in a completely different aspect.

“They were better tactically; they may have prepared better for this match,” he said. “Spain managed to put us under pressure.” Whilst a rematch between the two sides is not currently on the calendar, they could well meet again at the next European Championship. A tournament for which Les Bleus, if they wish to win it, will have to prepare thoroughly. And this is particularly true should they face La Roja.

“If we have to play them again, we’ll need to find the key. It’s certainly this tactical aspect that we’ll need to work on. We’ve got the collective and individual talent,” concluded Rabiot.
