Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick called an up-and-coming member of the goalkeeper ranks at the club up to first-team training on Friday morning.

The shot-stopper in question? Iker Rodríguez.

The situation between the posts has of course emerged as a headline talking point in Catalunya’s capital ahead of the final round of La Liga fixtures before the upcoming international break.

This comes after Barcelona no.1 Joan García suffered a fitness setback en route to the club’s dominant victory over Racing Santander in midweek.

The expectation is that the Spanish international will not be risked to face Sevilla on Saturday, with Wojciech Szczęsny taking over for the fixture.

The knock-on effect of this development, though, is another goalkeeper being afforded a matchday call-up for the trip to the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

And if the latest word stemming from the Ciutat Esportiva is anything to go by, then as much looks set to go the way of the aforementioned Iker Rodríguez.

As per a report from Blaugrana journalist Sergi Capdevila:

‘Flick called up Iker Rodríguez for today’s session. La Masia’s future goalkeeper, in principle, will double up this weekend (Sevilla+Barbastro for Barca Atlètic on Sunday) if there are no plan changes with Joan.’
