Barcelona starlet Xavi Espart has this week earned for himself a comparison with teammate and world champion Pedri. This comes after the versatile defender/midfielder was afforded a first-ever call-up to Spain’s U21 setup.

Espart is of course fresh off nothing short of a remarkable start to the new campaign in Catalunya’s capital. Cast into a prominent role at left-back by Hansi Flick, the 19-year-old has responded with a string of standout performances.

All told, across five La Liga starts to date, Espart has racked up a goal and two assists.

This ongoing excellence on the part of the youngster was on Friday recognised at international level, with Espart having made the jump from Spain’s U19 squad to the U21s.

Speaking to the media after his latest panel of players was officially unveiled, La Rojita boss David Gordo was therefore drawn on Espart’s name.

And in his response, the tactician revealed his take that the Barcelona academy graduate boasts many of the same qualities as Blaugrana teammate Pedri:

“His best quality is his excellent understanding of the game, space, and timing. And he can do it from any position. He’s decisive as a central midfielder and as a full-back. He’s very intelligent. He’s always one step ahead. In some ways, he reminds me of 
Pedri because of his understanding of the game. It seems like time moves differently for him.”
