Bristol City will look to halt a two-match losing streak when they welcome Watford to Ashton Gate on Friday evening, with both sides looking for a much-needed improvement in the Championship table.

Michael Skubala’s Bristol City made an encouraging start to the season, collecting 10 points from their opening five league matches. However, consecutive defeats against Southampton and Lincoln City have halted that progress. The first setback was particularly heavy, with the Robins losing 4-1 at Southampton, before suffering a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to newly promoted Lincoln City.

Despite those results, Bristol City have continued to create chances. They registered 11 more shots than Southampton and twice as many as Lincoln, suggesting their recent results have not entirely reflected their attacking output. Now 13th after seven matches, the Robins know that victory on Friday would move them back towards the playoff places.

The major concern is their home record. Bristol City have already suffered three home defeats this season, following a 2025/26 campaign in which they won only nine league matches at Ashton Gate.

Watford’s start under Alessio Dionisi has been similarly inconsistent as the Hornets have won only two of their opening seven Championship fixtures, leaving them 17th in the table. They began with an impressive victory over Southampton, but their only subsequent league win came against Preston last week.

That result failed to spark another positive run, with Watford losing 2-1 at home to Stoke City in their next outing. Their away form is an even greater concern. Watford have scored just once on the road this season, giving Bristol City reason to believe they can control the match if they avoid conceding early.

The two teams met three times last season, with Watford taking a draw and a victory from two of those encounters. Bristol City had the final say, though, producing a spectacular 5-1 FA Cup victory over the Hornets around New Year. That result will give the hosts some confidence, although neither team’s current league form suggests an easy encounter.

Bristol City’s ability to create chances despite their recent defeats should encourage Skubala. The Robins are likely to push Watford back and attempt to generate sustained pressure, particularly given the visitors’ struggles in front of goal away from home.

Watford may therefore prioritise defensive structure and look to counter-attack. The Hornets have enough attacking quality to cause problems if Bristol City commit too many players forward, but their lack of away goals means they need to make their limited opportunities count. Bristol City

Bristol City could name an unchanged XI despite returning home for their second match in four days. However, with this being their third game in six days and coming after consecutive defeats, Michael Skubala may opt for some rotation. Sam Greenwood and Dom Ballard are among those pushing for recalls in attack, potentially giving the Robins some additional energy in the final third.

One player who should retain his place is Rio Cardines, who has made an excellent start to the campaign. The full-back currently has five assists, more than any other player in the Championship, making his contribution from the right particularly important. Bristol City have just one absentee: Luke McNally, who remains sidelined with the cruciate ligament injury that has kept him out since January 2025.

The hosts are expected to retain their 4-2-3-1 formation, with Sam Tickle in goal and Cardines, Rob Dickie, Lisav Eissat, and Cameron Pring forming the back four. Joe Williams and Jason Knight should provide the midfield platform, while Yu Hirakawa, Ballard, and Scott Twine operate behind Lorent Tolaj.

Cardines’s attacking involvement could be particularly significant against a Watford side that has scored just once away from home this season. His ability to provide width and deliver from advanced positions gives Bristol City an additional route into the final third.

Watford

Watford are likely to make several changes after picking up further injury concerns in their recent defeat to Stoke City. Jordan Zemura was forced off shortly before half time and will miss the trip to Ashton Gate. Omar Haktab is expected to replace him at left-back.

Zemura joins a lengthy Watford injury list that includes Marc Bola, Jeremy Ngakia, Branimir Mlacic, Jack Grieves, Edoardo Bove, Kwadwo Baah, and Myron Boadu. There is, however, potentially positive news in attack. Michail Antonio joined Watford last week and was named among the substitutes against Stoke.

The former West Ham forward has not played since December 2024, having spent around 20 months recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident. He could now make his Watford debut at Ashton Gate, although his involvement and minutes are likely to be carefully managed. Watford are expected to retain a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Federico Ravaglia in goal and Kevin Keben, Mattie Pollock, Soumaila Coulibaly, and Haktab forming the defence.

Edo Kayembe and Hector Kyprianou should anchor the midfield, while Othmane Maamma, Iker Bravo, and Stephy Mavididi operate behind Mamadou Doumbia. The visitors’ biggest challenge will be their attacking output. Watford have scored just once away from home this season, so creating and converting chances will be essential.

If Antonio does feature, his experience and physical presence could provide Watford with a different attacking outlet. However, after such a lengthy period away from competitive football, it remains to be seen how much he can contribute immediately.

Cardines’s delivery and ability to advance into dangerous areas could be especially important against a Watford side that has struggled for attacking production away from home. With Bristol City looking to respond after consecutive defeats, Cardines could play a major role in helping the Robins create the chances they have been producing despite their recent results.
