Cologne head coach René Wagner has suggested supporters can expect to see Mikey Moore and Said El Mala sharing the pitch regularly over the course of the 2026/27 campaign. Moore made his first Bundesliga start in Saturday evening’s 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen, operating as the No. 10 behind Thijs Dallinga in Wagner’s 4-2-3-1. The Tottenham Hotspur loanee lasted 73 minutes before El Mala replaced him directly.

The substitution naturally left the two highly-rated youngsters without an opportunity to feature together on this occasion. Wagner nevertheless made clear afterwards that Saturday’s change should not be interpreted as evidence that Moore and El Mala are competing for one exclusive place in the side.

Mikey Moore’s impressive Bundesliga start continues

Moore has made an encouraging start to life in Germany since completing his season-long loan move from Tottenham at the end of August. He covered 9.86 kilometers in his 73 minutes on the pitch, reached a top speed of 31.8 km/h and repeatedly sought to carry the ball forward from the central attacking position.

El Mala entered in the 74th minute and moved onto the left, with Marius Bülter switching to the right. The German youth international quickly looked to attack Bremen’s defensive line and later created a late opportunity for Ragnar Ache after reaching the byline.

The two therefore offer Wagner different but potentially complementary forms of direct attacking threat. Moore’s ability to operate centrally, on either flank and between the lines also means Wagner does not have to choose between the Tottenham talent and one of Cologne’s most valuable young players.

Saturday’s direct substitution was dictated by the circumstances of the match. Wagner’s comments suggest that, as the season develops, Cologne supporters should expect to see considerably more of Moore and El Mala on the pitch at the same time.

Moore-El Mala partnership remains part of Wagner’s plans

“I think we’ll be seeing that combination [of Moore and El Mala] plenty of times [this season] and we’re all looking forward to it,” Wagner remarked at the post-match press conference when asked about swapping Moore out for El Mala directly. “The way the game unfolded didn’t allow [for El Mala to be subbed in earlier] today. We wanted to switch things up differently and had a different idea today.”
