Werder Bremen have officially confirmed the sale of highly-rated centre-back Karim Coulibaly to Racing Strasbourg. The 19-year-old moves to Ligue 1 for a reported €20m fixed fee, with Bremen also securing a ten percent sell-on clause.

The final figure falls below the sums Bremen once hoped to command for their breakout defensive talent. Get German Football News reported earlier this month that Werder had lowered their asking price from approximately €40m to a €25-30m negotiating range. Coulibaly’s ascent nevertheless represents a remarkable piece of player development for the Hanseatic club.

Rather than returning to the bench when more established defenders became available, Coulibaly remained in the starting XI. By October, his estimated market value had risen from €1m to €8m as clubs from England, Italy and Portugal began monitoring him. Steffen and Werder managing director Clemens Fritz both insisted that the rapid development had not surprised them. A hamstring injury disrupted the second half of his breakthrough campaign, but Coulibaly still progressed into the Germany U21 setup and finished his time at Werder with 27 competitive appearances.

The €20m agreement now takes Bremen’s reported summer transfer income beyond €40m following the departures of goalkeeper Mio Backhaus to Freiburg and Romano Schmid to Frosinone. Schmid’s €8.5m move to Italy had already given the club significant room to reshape Daniel Thioune’s squad.

Werder have simultaneously brought familiar faces back to the Weserstadion. Eren Dinkçi returned from Freiburg on loan before Niclas Füllkrug completed his own remarkable homecoming from West Ham United. Coulibaly’s sale thus represents another significant element of a summer featuring considerable turnover in Bremen.

Strasbourg’s connection to Chelsea also adds another dimension to the move. Both clubs operate under the BlueCo ownership structure and have regularly exchanged players in recent seasons. A future route to Stamford Bridge remains speculative, but Strasbourg have increasingly served as a developmental destination for young players operating within the wider ownership network.
