AZ Alkmaar set to reunite with Calvin Stengs

Mounir Boualin is reporting that AZ Alkmaar are set to reunite with Calvin Stengs. The former Nice and Antwerp man is available on a free after leaving Feyenoord this summer. Stengs is reportedly set to sign a short term deal with AZ Alkmaar to return to the club where he began his career.

The 27-year-old Stengs began his career with AZ Alkmaar as a winger and played over 100 games, scoring 24 goals before joining Nice in the summer of 2021. He struggled to breakthrough in Ligue 1, with just one goal in 32 games. In the summer of 2022 he was loaned out to Antwerp, where he played 31 games and scored three goals. Stengs became a key player for Antwerp as they won the league and cup double, ending a decades long wait for a league title.

During his time with Antwerp, Stengs had transitioned into a central midfield role, one that he proved effective in under Mark van Bommel. That summer Feyenoord bought him from Nice and he played 59 games for the side over two seasons, with nine goals. Stengs was part of the 2023/2024 KNVB Cup winning side, but injuries began to take their toll on him last season. He was loaned out to Pisa, but only managed four appearances.

He now leaves Feyenoord and returns to AZ Alkmaar on a free transfer with a chance to try and put his recent injury history behind him.
