Andoni Iraola leads race to become Chelsea manager amid Manchester United links
Andoni Iraola is the front-runner for the Chelsea manager position, with Manchester United trailing in the pursuit of the Bournemouth tactician.
Andoni Iraola’s availability in the managerial market has intensified competition between two Premier League heavyweights. As per Caught Offside, Chelsea are leading the race to land the Spanish tactician, with Manchester United currently behind in the pursuit of the 43-year-old, highly-rated Premier League manager.
Chelsea recently parted ways with Liam Rosenior despite public backing, as a fifth consecutive league defeat forced the club ownership’s hand. The Englishman was relieved of his duties following an unprecedented run of poor results that ownership could no longer support.
Multiple candidates are being considered for the position. Former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso remains in contention, while two other Spanish tacticians have recently entered the frame for the Chelsea role ahead of the summer. Cesc Fabregas is viewed as a significant contender, and Andoni Iraola has now emerged as the leading candidate for the position.
Iraola has confirmed his impending departure from Bournemouth at season’s end, with the club announcing former Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose as his replacement. Chelsea are now actively pursuing Iraola as their primary target, though as per Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are also monitoring the 43-year-old’s situation closely.
Manchester United remain undecided on their managerial direction, with Michael Carrick still very much in contention for the full-time role. However, the club are exploring alternatives, and the reality that managers of Iraola’s calibre may not wait indefinitely means he could be secured by Chelsea before United finalis their decision.
Could Chelsea appoint Andoni Iraola?
There is every possibility Iraola becomes Chelsea’s manager next season; however, he is the type of strategist who would demand clarity over his role and authority. Recent instances with Enzo Maresca and Rosenior reveal a pattern of Chelsea ownership seeking input on multiple decisions both on and off the pitch, which may not align with the 43-year-old Spaniard’s requirements for autonomy.
Should Chelsea ownership and Iraola reach consensus on how operations are managed both strategically and tactically, a deal can be completed. For now, Iraola remains the leading candidate, and timing is critical for the Blues to secure his agreement before Manchester United potentially makes a late move if his situation remains unresolved.
