Barcelona looking to steal a march on Manchester City in Eduardo Conceicao race

Barcelona will aim to beat Premier League clubs in the race to sign 16-year-old Brazilian whizkid Eduardo Conceicao from Palmeiras.

A report by TEAMtalk has revealed Barcelona’s desire to hijack Manchester City’s move for Eduardo Conceicao. Chelsea and Manchester United are also interested in the Palmeiras prodigy. However, while the Premier League clubs have held talks to sign the 16-year-old wonderkid, the Catalan giants “believe they are leading the race for his signature” and have dealt a blow to his other suitors.

Eduardo Conceicao and his ascent

Eduardo Conceicao is the latest promising prodigy from Palmeiras’s academy to take age-group football in his country by storm. Estevao Willian and Endrick are the most prominent academy graduates to make their mark for a European club since leaving Palmeiras, while other prospects have also risen in prominence since graduating from the club’s youth division.

As for Conceicao, the Brazilian wonderkid has scored five goals and provided three assists in 531 minutes of game time across 13 appearances in all competitions this term, and his exploits have triggered the attention of several high-profile clubs. Chelsea, Barcelona, Manchester City, and Manchester United are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

What next?

Barcelona’s squad building has relied on youth prospects, with Pedri, Gavi, Alejandro Balde, Fermin Lopez, and Lamine Yamal being the club’s shining lights. With Raphinha approaching his 30th birthday, signing a young winger can enable the Blaugrana to ensure a smooth transition on the left flank. Conceicao has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s interest in Eduardo Conceicao is hardly surprising. The Blues have never let go of an opportunity to sign Brazilian prodigies, with Estevao becoming a regular for the senior side this season. So, Conceicao is an option worth considering amid Alejandro Garnacho’s struggles in his debut season. As for Manchester City, Jeremy Doku and Savinho have not been as consistent as Pep Guardiola would have liked.

So, the Citizens need more productivity from the left flank to complement Rayan Cherki, Erling Haaland, and Antoine Semenyo. As for Manchester United, the Red Devils are eager to build a long-term offensive core by signing a few youngsters in the coming years. While Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad Diallo have been impressive on the flanks, Conceicao can complement them if he arrives at Old Trafford in two years.
