Liverpool are eyeing a surprise late loan deal for Lutsharel Geertruida to strengthen their backline before the deadline.

According to Ben Jacobs, Liverpool eyes a late loan deal for Lutsharel Geertruida, as Arne Slot eyes a reunion with his former player. The Reds are short on defensive numbers following a raft of injuries at the back, as they are ready to explore a rather complicated move for the Netherlands international.

Liverpool have had many defensive injuries this season, especially on the right-hand side. The early knee issue suffered by summer arrival Giovanni Leoni will see the defender miss the remainder of the season, but throughout the campaign, the right back position has been troublesome for Arne Slot.

Conor Bradley was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign, while Jeremie Frimpong has also suffered yet another injury. Joe Gomez is also on the treatment table, and with those issues coming at different stages of the campaign, Dominik Szoboszlai has often taken his place at right-back.

Liverpool cannot let the season slip by without adding another defender before the January deadline day, with a right back of utmost priority. There have been links to Vanderson of Monaco, but a deal may not be viable at this stage of the season, while Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson was also linked earlier.

Liverpool are now exploring a late loan move for Lutsharel Geertruida, who is on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig. Arne Slot eyes a reunion with his former Feyenoord player, as he can certainly solve a lot of their defensive issues, given the 25-year-old utility man can feature as a right back, centrally or even in midfield, as he has done so this season with Sunderland.

Is Lutsharel Geetruida’s move to Liverpool possible?

Geertruida does solve a lot of issues for Liverpool, but any deal to take the 25-year-old utility man on loan will be complicated. As per David Ornstein, RB Leipzig must first break the loan deal at Sunderland, with the Black Cats also in need of a replacement and compensation, although an agreement for a replacement player is reportedly close.

As per Fabrizio Romano, the agreement between Liverpool and Geertruida was done days ago, so it’s a matter of the three clubs finding respective agreements. There’s a big chance that Liverpool will land the Dutch international, and Slot reunites with his former player, who could play a huge role for them in the remainder of the season.
