Tottenham set to sign Souza, beat Barcelona in the chase
Tottenham have beaten off competition from the likes of Barcelona as they are closing in on the signing of Brazilian left-back Souza.
According to The Athletic, Brazilian full-back Souza is all set to sign for Tottenham ahead og the next days, as a medical has been planned in the coming period. Spurs will pay a fee of around €15 million, and it appears they have beaten off competition from the likes of Barcelona for the Santos star.
Souza had only made his mark in the Santos first team last season, and since then, he has grown into one of the brightest prospects to come out of the club’s system. The story states the Brazilian side had included a €60 million release clause for Brazilian sides if they wanted to sign the talented left-back and a €100 million clause for teams from overseas.
It appears Tottenham have found a massive deal for the left-back, as they have reportedly agreed a €15 million package with Santos for the transfer of the 19-year-old Brazilian wonderkid. It’s quite unclear how Spurs managed to lower the asking rate, although it must be something to do with Santos’ desire to generate cash.
Tottenham had been progressing in their effort to sign Souza over the last few days, as Thomas Frank’s side lacked a left back to bring some depth in the position. Key starter Destiney Udogie has missed the last six games of late with a hamstring problem, while Spurs have been playing Ben Davies there, as there’s a clear need to reinforce there.
Tottenham have secured the signing of Souza, and as per Sport, Barcelona were in contention for the 19-year-old Brazilian wonderkid. Spurs appear to have beaten the Catalans in the race for the talented full-back, as the Spanish side were keen to land him in this window.
Souza to sign for Tottenham?
While there’s an agreement in place, Fabrizio Romano confirmed the fee to be in the region of €15 million, and it seems the medicals are set to take place in the coming days. While the move is not yet completed, there’s a verbal agreement between Tottenham and Santos over the player.
Souza is likely to be part of the first team plans for the present and future, as Spurs look to build a young core for the long run. He will likely help the club phase out the experienced Ben Davies from next season, and add competition in the position to test Udogie’s credentials.
