Jamie Carragher weighs in on Chelsea move for Liam Rosenior

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher warns Chelsea against appointing RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior as their new manager.

Chelsea parted ways with Enzo Maresca at the start of the new year, and now they are on the lookout for their next manager. The Italian manager did wonders for them in his debut campaign. Not only did he secure Champions League football, but he also helped them win the Conference League and the Club World Cup.

His team certainly carried that form into the new campaign, and everything was on track until the end of November. However, they hit rock bottom in December, and internal tension between the owners and the manager resulted in some cryptic comments by Maresca during press conferences.

Those comments certainly didn’t go down well, and eventually, they showed him the exit door. With Maresca gone, Chelsea have been looking at possible options to replace him. While they do have quite a few names on their wishlist, Liam Rosenior is clearly the front-runner for the job.

While he has done a great in the French top flight, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is not sure if he is the right appointment for the club. The 47-year-old openly expressed his opinion on Sky Sports, making it clear that he doesn’t believe the Strasbourg boss will have the desired impact at Chelsea.

Carragher on Maresca and Rosenior

While speaking about Chelsea’s managerial situation, Carragher said, “I was a big fan of Enzo Maresca as a manager. When he came up against some of the biggest managers in this league, he more than held his own. But I could see this coming: you can’t start speaking out of turn at any club, but especially Chelsea who have so many sporting directors.

“As soon as the results started to deteriorate in the last few weeks, he didn’t turn up at a press conference, this was inevitable.

“Now Maresca’s gone, the focus will be on the club and the ownership. I’ve been quite critical of the way they’ve gone about it over the last three and a half years.

“If you look at the timeline of managers: they inherited Thomas Tuchel, a Champions League winning manager. It now looks like they’re going to inherit Liam Rosenior, who has managed Derby, Hull and Strasbourg.

“It’s a great opportunity for him, but Chelsea Football Club and their supporters are not used to those appointments. They are used to Mourinho, Hiddink, Conte – big-name managers coming to make a huge impact on their club. I don’t see Rosenior doing that.”

Rosenior set to be the next Chelsea boss

Rosenior has done an impressive job at Strasbourg, a club that shares the same ownership as Chelsea under the BlueCo umbrella. When he was handed a new deal back in April, the owners did inform him that they were looking at him as a potential long-term replacement for Maresca.

While neither party thought it would happen this season, a surprising turn of events meant the 41-year-old has already been offered the role. He has reportedly given the green light to the switch and is expected to take charge within this week.

Rosenior’s appointment now seems like a mere formality. While he is set to take charge of the London club, Carragher doesn’t feel he will have a huge impact at the club. Chelsea are known for appointing big-name managers with exceptional track records, and the English manager is certainly not one of the top managers in the world.
