Xabi Alonso refuses to rule out Liverpool move
Xabi Alonso did not rule out a move to Liverpool when asked about speculation surrounding his own job at Real Madrid.
There’s a potential managerial merry-go-round brewing in the background, as there are some high-profile names that are part of this. There are potentially two epicentres for this saga, with Liverpool boss Arne Slot facing uncertainties over his role amid recent events.
The explosive Mohamed Salah interview aside, Slot has been facing criticisms for his role in Liverpool’s bad run of results over the last few months. There have been calls to replace the Dutchman in Merseyside, with Xabi Alonso now seen as a candidate to replace him.
Alonso himself is facing plenty of scrutiny after an inconsistent start to the season. He is also facing some player problems at Real Madrid with the likes of Vinicius Junior not happy with the Spaniard’s coaching methods, which has resulted in the Brazilian not renewing his deal as things stand.
Jurgen Klopp is being considered to replace Alonso, with recent reports stating that Florentino Perez will consider his options depending on how Real Madrid fare against Manchester City in the Champions League. However, there’s no clarity whether Alonson’s job is realistically in any danger at the moment, but things could take a different direction.
During Alonso’s pre-match interview ahead of the Manchester City clash, he was asked about the Liverpool job. As Fabrizio Romano’s post on X ran his comments, the Spaniard refused to rule out a move to Anfield, which has caused fresh speculation over his future as well as that of Slot.
Alonso said, “There’s a bond with Liverpool. I’m in the place where I want to be [Real Madrid], you never know what will happen in the future”.
Liverpool reportedly considered appointing Alonso back in January 2024, when Klopp announced he would step down from the role as the club’s manager. Alonso was closing in on a Bundesliga title triumph with Bayer Leverkusen, and chose to stay at the club for another season.
While Liverpool achieved success by appointing Slot at the helm, with the Dutchman winning the Premier League in his first season, things have gone downhill for the Dutchman since. Hence, there’s a distinct possibility of Liverpool now sacking Slot and replacing him with a new man in charge, which could potentially be Alonso if Perez parts ways with the Spaniard.
