Fabian Schar linked with Newcastle United exit ahead of January

Newcastle United defensive mainstay Fabian Schar could end up parting ways with the club in the upcoming winter transfer window.

Fabian Schar’s future at Newcastle United is up in the air as his contract runs out at the end of the season. While he could end up leaving the club as a free agent in the summer, a report from Football Insider suggests the Swiss international could look for a surprise mid-season exit.

Schar has only gone from strength to strength since joining the Magpies back in 2018. He has been one of their mainstays under Eddie Howe in recent seasons. While the 33-year-old is no longer a regular starter, he still has an important role in their squad.

Schar is closing in on a potential exit

However, his future has become a big talking point as his current deal runs out at the end of the season. Reports earlier suggested that the Magpies have made significant progress in renewal talks, as they look to keep him at the club beyond this season.

But it seems the offer of regular game time from other top clubs could lure him away. With Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman, the preferred choice under Eddie Howe, Schar could certainly consider a move away.

Multiple German clubs seem keen on his signature, and they could offer him a prominent role in the team. They continue to monitor his situation ahead of a potential transfer. While the Magpies remain reluctant to lose him in the upcoming transfer window, it could be a possibility if the player ends up pushing for an exit. If there is a decent offer on the table, even the Magpies could look to cash in on the 33-year-old.

O’Rourke’s take on Schar’s situation

While speaking about Schar’s future on the Inside Track podcast, Pete O’Rourke said: “Obviously Schar is out of contract at the end of the season and there is interest from overseas potentially on a free transfer.

“I think Eddie Howe ideally would like to keep hold of Fabian Schar. He definitely won’t want to lose him mid-season.

“Ideally Newcastle would like to keep hold of Fabian Schar, but a lot will depend on the player, whether he wants to stay or not.

“If he’s not playing regularly at this stage of his career, he could maybe be tempted in a move away in search of regular first team football.

“He started the first four games of the season, but obviously lost his place when he picked up that injury, then Malick Thiaw came in and he’s been outstanding alongside Sven Botman.”

Having lost his place in the team, the 33-year-old could certainly be tempted to join a club that can offer him a more prominent role. While a mid-season transfer looks unlikely, it can’t be completely ruled out. Meanwhile, Howe remains reluctant to lose Schar and would love to see him pen a new deal at the club.
