Wolves set to block January exit for Joao Gomes

Tottenham and Manchester United have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of Wolves midfield mainstay Joao Gomes.

Joao Gomes’ consistent performances for Wolves have resulted in a lot of interest from across Europe. Premier League giants Tottenham and Manchester United are two top clubs that have been linked with the Brazilian.

While both clubs would love to sign him, they are unlikely to get their hands on the 24-year-old. According to a report from TEAMtalk, Wolves are set to block a January exit for Joao Gomes because of a promise they have made to Rob Edwards.

After coming up the ranks at Flamengo and making a name for himself while playing for their first team, Gomes made the move to Wolves at the start of 2023. He has only gone from strength to strength since.

Not only has he established himself as one of their mainstays, but he has also managed to cement his spot in the Brazil national team. The 24-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best young midfielders in the Premier League.

Premier League giants keen on Joao Gomes

His performances have placed him on the wishlist of some of the biggest clubs in the country. Manchester United are one of the clubs that are keen on signing him. Ruben Amorim is keen on adding a new central midfielder to his squad in the winter window.

He wants someone who has a solid defensive base and can also play the role of a deep-lying playmaker. Gomes is one of the names on their wishlist, and he certainly is a great fit for Amorim’s system.

Apart from the Red Devils, Tottenham are also keen on signing him. Thomas Frank isn’t pleased with the performance of his midfielder. He wants more quality, more competition in the centre of the park, and Gomes, with his versatility, could certainly help.

Winter move is very unlikely

However, both clubs are unlikely to get their hands on the Brazilian international. Wolves won’t sanction a mid-season departure as they have promised new manager Edwards that they won’t sell any of their prominent figures in the winter window.

They will block any approaches in the upcoming transfer window. Both Tottenham and United will have to wait until the summer to try their luck. If Wolves fail to survive the drop, Gomes’ departure will become almost certain.
