Fiorentina Give Pioli the Boot After Disastrous Start

Fiorentina have made the call to sack Stefano Pioli following a dismal start to the season. They are still winless in Serie A and sit at the bottom of the table with just four points. Long-serving director Daniele Pradè resigned over the weekend, but the move didn’t jolt the squad.

The Viola handed the reins to Primavera coach Daniele Galloppa for now. After evaluating a few names, Roberto D’Aversa is currently considered the frontrunner for the job, Mediaset reports. The brass would like to onboard a manager who would accept just a season-long contract.

Fiorentina hesitated on firing Pioli, who didn’t want to step down, because he signed a lucrative three-year, €3M contract last summer. Considering his staff and the gross sum, the Viola will have to eat about €30M until 2027. The parties are bargaining over the exit package.

Their search intertwines with Genoa’s one, which axed Patrick Vieira before the Sassuolo game. The Grifone have been linked to Daniele De Rossi and Paolo Vanoli, who were early candidates for the other opening but lost steam.

Our Take on Fiorentina and Piola

They have looked so bad and listless that they had to do it, as, for whatever reason, the returning boss and the squad didn’t gel. They should assess whether they can patch things up with Raffaele Palladino now that Pradè is gone. D’Aversa has never coached at this level, and his recent seasons haven’t been great at the helm of relegation strugglers. Going with him or another middling gaffer would be a manifest lack of ambition and mark their distance from the big teams. Juventus didn’t bat an eye when needed and will just stomach the monetary cost of their mistakes.
