Why Habib Beye remains on the bench for Rennes
Contrary to expectations, Habib Beye will be on the touchline when Stade Rennais face Toulouse FC on Wednesday. The Frenchman was present at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference, despite it being signalled that his time with the Breton club may have been up just hours earlier.
After Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to OGC Nice, Beye was summoned to Arnaud Pouille’s office on Monday, following the morning session. The manager was fearing the sack and even asked us much at the time that he was summoned. Pouille seemed to suggest that this was the case, and so Beye and his assistants began to pack their affairs and even bid farewell to some members of staff and players.
However, the meeting with Pouille ended up being less firm than expected, according to a report from Foot Mercato, and so Beye was kept in his post. It is a stay of execution for Beye, who needs a result against Toulouse to save his job. A win would buy him some time, but a bigger turnaround is needed if he is to stay in the job more long-term.
