Eredivisie Matchweek 10 Review
10 games down in the Eredivisie and this past weekend saw a clash between the title favourites in PSV and Feyenoord. At the other end, Heracles are looking destined for the drop already.
Friday’s action: Goal fest at the Abe Lenstra Stadion
Heerenveen and NAC Breda got the Eredivisie weekend going with a goal fest on Friday evening. Poor Terence Kongolo came off the bench for the injured Rio Hillen and scored an own goal just before half-time to give Heerenveen the lead. However, Leo Greiml and Sydney van Hooijdonk made it 2-1 shortly into the second half. Maas Willemsen responded ten minutes later to make it 2-2 before Vaclav Sejk looked to have won the game in the 80th minute. However, in the final minute Mohamed Nassoh struck to earn NAC Breda are vital point away from home.
Saturday’s action: Volendam make Heracles suffer, Groningen win away and an entertaining draw in Zwolle
FC Groningen continued their quest of not drawing a single game this season with a 2-1 win away to Fortuna Sittard. David van der Werff struck early for his second goal of the season before Marvin Peersman made it 2-0 just after the hour mark. Fortuna Sittard did pull one back, with veterans Ivo Pinto and Paul Gladon combining for the latter to make it 2-1. However, Groningen held on to remain in the top eight.
A solitary goal from Tobias Lauritsen was enough for Sparta Rotterdam to earn all three points against newly promoted Telstar. The Norwegian striker grabbed his sixth goal of the campaign after 25 minutes for the home side to take the lead. Telstar did managed to get 14 shots off and finish the game with 53% of the ball, however they were unable to make any of their chances or possession count. That is just one win in five now for Telstar.
Volendam grabbed just their second win of the season with a 3-0 home win over struggling Heracles. A goal from Nordin Bukala just before half-time was followed up by one quickly after the break from Yannick Leliendal. Mario Engels got himself sent off just before the hour mark to make things even harder for the away side, who then conceded a third from Aurelio Oehlers. Volendam have now won two of their last four games, while Heracles look almost certain to be relegated this season.
NEC Nijmegen made it four games unbeaten with a 2-2 draw at PEC Zwolle, with the hosts making it back to back 2-2 draws in the Eredivisie. Koki Ogawa got his fourth goal of the season early for the away side, only for Jamiro Monteiro to equalise with a well placed free-kick. The sides traded goals shortly into the second half, with Ahmetcan Kaplan giving NEC the lead only for Koen Kostons to equalise a few minutes later. Kostons now has six goals for the season, more than he has scored in his last two campaigns for SC Paderborn and Kortrijk.
Sunday’s action: PSV and Feyenoord clash at the top of the table
While all eyes were on Rotterdam for the top of the table clash, Ajax and FC Twente played at a five goal thriller. The hosts took an early lead through Kristian Hlynsson. After trailing at the half, Jonny Heitinga rang the changes for Ajax and the effect was almost immediate. Wout Weghorst and Oscar Gloukh struck within the space of a minute to make it 2-1 to the away side. Mike Godts, provider for the Gloukh goal, then made it 3-1 in a goal spree that lasted just seven minutes. Veteran striker Ricky van Wolfsinkel pulled one back for Twente from the spot but they were unable to find an equaliser. Ajax pick up a crucial three points to relieve the pressure on their head coach.
The earlier score line was repeated in Rotterdam. Ismael Saibari gave PSV a 1-0 lead at the half over Feyenoord, only for Luciano Valente to strike five minutes into the second half. Saibari was not to be denied, and the forward helped himself to a hat-trick by the hour mark to put the defending champions in control. Oussama Targhalline did pull one back for Feyenoord with 15 minutes to go, but they ended up relinquishing their lead at the top of the Eredivisie. After 10 games, both sides are level on points in what appears to be the makings of a fantastic title race.
AZ Alkmaar hammered last seasons surprise package FC Utrecht at home. Two goals from Troy Parrott, one from midweek hero Sven Mijnans and another from Mees de Wit was enough for a 4-1 victory. Gjival Zechiel did pull one back for Utrecht to make it 3-1, but the score line could have been much worse had Parrott made it a hat-trick from the spot. Unfortunately te striker missed the penalty, but the win keeps AZ in touch with the top two after PSV’s win over Feyenoord.
Go Ahead Eagles followed up their victory over Aston Villa with a 2-0 home win over newly promoted Excelsior. A second-half brace from Mathis Suray, the hero from the midweek win over the Premier League side, means the Eagles now sit in 10th spot. Suray now has five goals in all competitions this season. Excelsior remain in the relegation play-off spot and face Telstar next weekend in a relegation six pointer.
