‘Having been a great striker doesn’t necessarily make you a great manager’ – Odsonne Édouard takes swipe at Ruud Van Nistelrooy
Odsonne Édouard’s (27) experience at Leicester City last season was not a positive one. The Frenchman joined the Foxes on loan from Crystal Palace last season, in search of game time. He didn’t find it.
On a collective level, it was a season to forget for Leicester. Having earned promotion back to the Premier League, they lost their manager, Enzo Maresca, before the season had even started. Steve Cooper came in to replace him, however, he was quickly ejected, with former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy brought in to replace him in December.
However, whilst he completed the season on the touchline, he too was sacked upon the conclusion of the campaign, which resulted in relegation back to the EFL Championship. It was also a tough campaign for Édouard, who played an extremely peripheral role, playing just 142 minutes of Premier League football during the campaign.
Speaking to L’Équipe, the centre-forward, who is now bouncing back at RC Lens, evoked his time with the Foxes, whilst also taking a swipe at his former manager. “The Premier League is indescribable. You have to experience it to understand, but then that went badly at Leicester. I didn’t get along well with Van Nistelrooy. I found myself blocked for seven months without playing. Having been a great striker doesn’t necessarily make you a great manager,” said Édouard.
