Emile Heskey outlines Arne Slot challenge after too many changes at Liverpool
Former Liverpool star Emile Heskey has had his say about the situation the club and Arne Slot are going through currently.
Liverpool are in a tough position after the recent round of fixtures, which has seen them lose three consecutive games in the Premier League and once in the Champions League. Overall, those losses have had a big effect on their chances in both competitions, which has added to the pressure on Arne Slot.
The overarching theme in the wake of how Liverpool have started their season has been about giving more time to their recruits. The Reds signed big-name players like Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike in addition to full-back pair Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkes.
However, none of those sars barring may be. Ekitike have hit the ground running, and Arne Slot has somewhat found it difficult to get cohesion out of his team. Henxe, there are obvious struggles throughout the pitch, while the likes of Mohamed Salah have also underperformed.
Former Liverpool star Emile Heskey, through his comments that appeared on Team Talk, tends to run the same narrative about Liverpool players needing time. However, he also insisted that Arne Slot is under no pressure at the moment, but did state that things are looking slow at the moment.
Heskey said, “I don’t think he’s under pressure, but people will be looking at him differently, because one thing with Arne Slot last season, a lot of talk about his in-game changes, his philosophy, blah, blah. We need to see that now. We need to see more of that.”
“When your back’s against the wall, how do you change things? How do you bring freshness to something that’s looking a little bit… not stale, but it’s not, it’s not looking great at this moment. So we need to see what changes he can make.”
“It’s looking very slow. It’s looking very sluggish in the sense of the players adapting, the adaptation of the players coming into the squad.
“We’re in an era of a ‘quick fix’. Everyone wants everything NOW. I was lucky to be playing in an era when you were given time.
“Thierry Henry was given time – and it took him a few games to get going at Arsenal, and look what he achieved! But he was still given time. Nicolas Anelka was given time. Patrick Vieira was given time. Emmanuel Petit was given time.”
Liverpool have some tough games ahead, and coupled with the three or four losses in recent weeks, they could be in big trouble if Slot can get the best out of them. For instance, they will face Manchester City away from home, and on current form, Pep Guardiola’s side are looking like the favourites in that game.
Should that happen and Arsenal continue on their splendid form, there’s every chance Liverpool could become irrelevant in the title chase. The same could be said about the Champions League, as they must win over Eintracht Frankfurt, or risk bowing out of the top-eight race.
