AS Roma want Joshua Zirkzee in January, but FFP poses an issue

AS Roma are interested in acquiring the services of Manchester United misfit Joshua Zirkzee in January, but FFP could pose an obstacle.

Joshua Zirkzee seems to be surplus to requirements at Manchester United, and having had only limited game time so far this season, the Dutch international could end up pushing for a move away from the club in the winter window.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport via SportWitness, AS Roma are keen on signing the United forward. Gian Piero Gasperini is desperate to bolster his attack mid-season, and Zirkzee is quite high on his wishlist. However, Financial Fair Play regulations do complicate matters for them.

On the back of an impressive rise at Bologna, Manchester United forked out a significant fee to sign the 24-year-old striker in the summer of 2024. While they had massive expectations from the young forward, things haven’t really worked out for him.

He could only manage seven goals in his debut campaign and has often found himself on the bench in the ongoing campaign. He didn’t play a part in their win over Liverpool on Sunday and has only started one league game so far.

With just 82 minutes of first-team action across his four outings, Zirkzee is slowly getting frustrated by his situation. While his contract runs until 2029, he could end up pushing for a move away, and United might not stand in his way as long as they can recoup a significant part of what they had invested.

Roma could make a move for Zirkzee

AS Roma are interested in the services of the Dutch international. The Italian giants seek more quality in the final third as Gasperini is not happy with the current options at his disposal. He wants to bring in a top forward in the winter window, and Zirkzee is quite high on their wishlist.

However, a potential move can be hindered by Roma’s financial issues. The Italian club are likely to be fined by UEFA for a financial breach in 2025. As a result, they want to avoid any potential sanctions in 2026. Since they can only make limited moves next year, they want to sign players who can certainly make an impact.

Zirkzee hasn’t been in the best of form of late, and they are not certain if he can produce immediate results. Given their FFP issues, Roma have significant doubts about signing the 24-year-old.
