Liverpool set for talks with Andrew Robertson over new contract
Liverpool are eager to tie down Andrew Robertson, among other players, to new deals to avoid losing them on a free next summer.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool does not plan to let some of their experienced players leave on a free transfer next season. On the list is Andrew Robertson, with the left-back seen as a valuable member of the squad, as the Reds want to tie him down to a new agreement amid Atletico Madrid’s interest.
Liverpool may have splashed in the market on new recruits, which included full-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. The latter is seen as the long-term option for the left-back role, which cast doubts over Andrew Robertson’s future back in the summer.
Robertson was linked with a move away in the summer, with Atletico Madrid interested back then. Some reports did state the left-back was open to the idea of moving to Spain, but ended up staying at Liverpool, although his current deal there ends in the summer.
Atletico Madrid are still interested, and there is a big chance they will keep monitoring his situation, especially as talks of a new contract have been rife in recent times. Robertson is widely tipped to sign for Atletico Madrid next summer, but Liverpool are prepared to make a big effort to keep him.
Liverpool have a few players, like Robertson and Ibrahima Konate are in the final year of their deals, with the club not keen to lose them on a free transfer next summer. For now, Robertson is set for a stay ahead of the January window, but his future beyond the summer is still under considerable doubt.
Andrew Robertson to leave Liverpool?
Given his current status as a squad player, Robertson believes he has plenty left in the tank ot play at the highest levels. This is the main reason why Atletico Madrid may have a good enough chance to convince the long-serving key star to come into a competitive team and stake a claim for a starting spot.
Liverpool may not be in the strongest negotiating position with Robertson, as they are not ready to offer guarantees of an important role for the left-back. Hence, his Liverpool future is up in the air, as Atletico Madrid might get a boost in their pursuit of Robertson.
