Tottenham in transfer tussle to sign Lautaro Rivero
Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly look to sign 21-year-old Argentine defensive prospect Lautaro Rivero from River Plate, with Atletico Madrid also interested in him.
According to a report by Argentine outlet El Intransigente, Lautaro Rivero is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing another centre-back next year. So, the 21-year-old River Plate prospect has emerged as a target for the North London club.
However, the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners are not the only high-profile clubs chasing Rivero’s signature, as the youngster is also a target for Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, the Moreno native has a release clause worth €100 million in his contract with River Plate, and a “significant offer” will compel Los Millonarios to part ways with him.
Who is Lautaro Rivero?
Lautaro Rivero has established himself as one of the best young prospects in his homeland since breaking into the first-team squad at River Plate. The 21-year-old spent his formative years with River Plate and has made considerable progress in the last couple of years, despite not being a regular for Los Millonarios.
The Argentine defensive prospect has made ten appearances thus far for River Plate, accumulating 900 minutes of game time. Meanwhile, Rivera’s progress and potential have piqued the attention of several well-known clubs, with Tottenham Hotspur among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.
London calling?
Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Lautaro Rivero is understandable. The Lilywhites are scouring the market for a centre-back, even though Thomas Frank has a stacked central defensive unit. Additionally, Tottenham completed a permanent move for Kevin Danso earlier this year and signed Kota Takai in the summer transfer window.
However, Radu Dragusin faces an uncertain future at the North London club after struggling to make his mark in the last two years. Meanwhile, widespread reports have heavily linked Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero with European bigwigs. Several candidates, including Mario Gila, have thus emerged on Tottenham’s radar, with Rivero also a viable target.
However, Tottenham will face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid for the 21-year-old Argentine defender’s signature. Meanwhile, Rivera has a release clause worth €100 million in his contract with River Plate, and a “significant offer” will compel Los Millonarios to part ways with him.
