Napoli Eye Another Underused Manchester United Player

Napoli have set sights on Kobbie Mainoo, who’s no longer a regular at Manchester United. They already tried to nab him on loan late in the past transfer market window, but the Red Devils didn’t want to lose him at the time, Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto report (via SOSFanta).

The midfielder has logged only 6 appearances for a total of just over 200 minutes so far. He has started just once in a Carabao Cup fixture. The youngster lost his spot following the appointment of Ruben Amorim. He has 78 matches, 7 goals, and 3 helpers with his current club and 10 caps with England under his belt.

If the situation doesn’t improve, Mainoo will push to leave to improve his chances of being called up for the World Cup, and Napoli are on his wish list of destinations. Two of his former teammates, Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay, have quickly found their footing in Campania after departing.

As for the Dane, who has already scored four goals since returning to Italy, the Partenopei will have to decide next June whether to disburse €44M to buy him out. They have spent €6M to have him on loan. If the Azzurri redeemed him and ever decided to sell him in the future, Manchester United would have the right to match the offer or pocket 7.5 percent of the profit.

Our Take on Napoli and Mainoo

The Scudetto champions can surely use another central midfielder, and Antonio Conte’s work on talented outcasts hasn’t gone unnoticed. Still, straight loans aren’t great for big teams, and the Red Devils don’t really give away their players, even if they aren’t fixtures. Plus, there’s always a chance they’ll change the coach.
