Ross Wilson verbally agrees to join Newcastle United, talks with Nottingham Forest advance

Newcastle United are in advanced talks with Nottingham Forest over the appointment of Ross Wilson, with personal terms already agreed.

Newcastle United have been on the lookout for a new sporting director since the start of the summer, and according to a report from The Guardian, the Magpies are finally poised to fill the vacant position, as they are in advanced talks to appoint Ross Wilson.

As per a report from Sky Sports, the Tyneside club already have a verbal agreement in place with the 41-year-old. Wilson is set to take charge as Newcastle United’s new chief. While they are hoping that he can play an active part in the upcoming winter transfer window, Eddie Howe’s team will first have to agree a compensation with Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle United are already in advanced talks with the Tricky Trees; as a result, it will be interesting to see if both parties can reach a common ground in time for him to help Howe in the winter window.

Ross Wilson’s time at Nottingham Forest

Ross Wilson was a part of Scottish giants Rangers before he made the switch to Nottingham Forest at the start of 2023. The 41-year-old has done wonders at the Nottinghamshire-based club. Not only has he shaped their recruitment strategy, but he has also supervised the upgrade of the club’s academy, women’s team, medical department and overall infrastructure.

His impact at the club has not gone unnoticed, and with him looking to leave Nottingham Forest, multiple top clubs want to make him a part of their project. Newcastle United have emerged as front-runners. Their sporting director position has been vacant since Paul Mitchell stood down back in June.

The Magpies consider Wilson just the perfect fit for their project, as he can not only help them with their transfers, but also help improve the club infrastructure as a whole. The 41-year-old could establish structures that help the club compete with the best sides in the country.

Wilson set to join Newcastle United

Wilson is no longer playing an active part at Nottingham Fores,t having agreed to join Newcastle United earlier this week. While he is keen on making the switch, the move has not been that straightforward, as Forest’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, has been reluctant to let him go.

However, with the 41-year-old giving the green light, Marinakis doesn’t have too many options to play with. The Magpies are already in advanced talks with the Tricky Trees. They are hoping to reach a common ground with regard to the compensation, as they want him to be available for the winter window.

Eddie Howe has been pushing for his appointment, and as things stand, the former Rangers chief is on the verge of joining them.
