Newcastle scouts run the rule over Atletico Madrid star ahead of possible January move
Atletico Madrid made a number of squad changes during the summer, and there could be more to come in January when the transfer window re-opens. Signings could be made, but given the money that has already been spent in 2025, it’s likely that there would be no one coming in without exits first.
And one of those possible departures could be Alexander Sorloth, who has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter this season. He has appeared in the line-up on only three occasions, but one of those was the resounding derby success against Real Madrid – a match in which he scored.
And as it turns out, Sorloth was being watched on that day at the RiyadhAir Metropolitano, with Marca reporting that two emissaries from Newcastle United were in attendance, with their objective being to run the rule over the Norway international.

Sorloth was a target for Newcastle during the recent summer transfer window, although in the end, they brought in Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa from Stuttgart and Brentford respectively. But despite this, their interest has remained, and he could be the third number nine added to Eddie Howe’s squad.
Atleti were open to selling Sorloth in the summer
The fact that Sorloth has not been a regular starter this season suggests that Atleti would sell at the right price, and given that they were open to offers during the summer, it would not be a surprise if this stance remained in place. However, they would need a replacement, given that it would leave Julian Alvarez, Antoine Griezmann and Giacomo Raspadori as their striker options for the remainder of the campaign.
The fact that Newcastle signed two strikers in the summer would mean that a move for Sorloth in January would make little sense, but right now, it cannot be ruled out completely.
