Liverpool learn asking price for Julian Alvarez
Arne Slot’s Liverpool will have to fork out £100 million to sign Atletico Madrid attacking mainstay Julian Alvarez.
Liverpool were one of the most active teams in the recently concluded transfer window. The Reds forked out in excess of £400 million to bolster Arne Slot’s team. While they have significantly strengthened their attack, the Merseyside club are showing no signs of slowing down.
According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Slot’s team are now interested in acquiring the services of Julian Alvarez, who has been doing wonders at Atletico Madrid. While the links have come as a surprise, the Reds have been keeping tabs on him for a while.
Alvarez made a name for himself at Manchester City. He had a two-year-long stint at the club and was quite an important member of Pep Guardiola’s squad. While he contributed towards 55 goals in his 103 outings, Alvarez wasn’t a regular starter because of the competition for places.
As a result, he ended up joining Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024 in search of a more prominent role. The Argentine World Cup winner had quite a promising debut season and has been on fire this season. He has six goals and an assist in his seven outings.
The 25-year-old dropped a masterclass against Real Madrid in the derby. He bagged two goals, one of which was a sensational free-kick and helped Diego Simeone’s team go past the league leaders (5-2). Following his sensational start to the season, Alvarez has now become the talk of the town.
Multiple top clubs are showing interest in his services, and Liverpool are one of them. The Reds seem quite interested in having such a versatile forward in their ranks. But, signing him won’t be that straightforward, as he is an integral part of Simeone’s team, and he won’t want to let him leave.
O’Rourke on Liverpool’s interest in Alvarez
While speaking on the Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke said: “It would be a surprise if Liverpool were to pursue a move for Alvarez. He was on their list, but that was before they signed Isak.
“Obviously then they’ve got Ekitike as well, that’s two forwards already brought in to bolster the attack.
“It looks a real difficult deal to do now just due to the finances involved.
“I don’t think Atletico Madrid want to lose Julian Alvarez either. He’s a real key man for Diego Simeone’s side.
“He’s under contract at the Metropolitano until 2030 as well, it a huge fee to even consider selling him. You’re probably looking around the £100million mark.”
Liverpool unlikely to sign Alvarez
The Merseyside club had Alvarez on their wishlist during the summer. While they retain interest in him, they are unlikely to make a move anytime soon, having added Alexander Isak to their squad on deadline day. The Reds also signed Hugo Ekitike in the summer; as a result, they already have enough quality up top.
More importantly, having forked out a fortune in the summer, they do not have enough funds to prise him away from Atletico. The Spanish giants consider him their most valuable asset, and they won’t let him leave on the cheap.
They would at least want £100 million for the 25-year-old, which is certainly beyond Liverpool’s capabilities given how much they had spent in the summer.
