Federico Chiesa could push for winter Liverpool exit

Italian winger Federico Chiesa could push for a move away from Liverpool in the winter transfer window.

According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Federico Chiesa could be forced out of Liverpool in January. The Italian international has fallen further down the pecking order following the arrival of Alexander Isak, and having been left out of the Champions League squad, the former Juventus winger may now look to leave the club when the transfer window reopens.

Chiesa came into the limelight on the back of his impressive performances for Juventus as well as the Italian national team. While he had a sensational start to his senior career, injuries derailed his progress, and he slowly fell out of favour at the Turin-based club.

The 27-year-old eventually ended up joining Liverpool for just £10 million. While he was hoping to get his career back on track at the Merseyside club, things didn’t go according to plan for him.

After struggling with a muscle injury in the initial phase of his debut campaign, he sat on the bench for the majority of the time. He only made 14 appearances with less than 500 minutes of first-team action.

O’Rourke’s take on Chiesa’s future

While speaking on the Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke said: “There’s a number of clubs that will be monitoring Chiesa’s situation at Liverpool”,

“Let’s see what happens to him now the Alexander Isak deal has gone through – that’s another striking option for Arne Slot.

“Will that push Chiesa even further down the pecking order? You would imagine it would do, and he’s been left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad due to the numbers, they can’t fit him in there.

“Liverpool will probably need him around January because Mo Salah will be going away to the African Cup of Nations with Egypt.

“That might open opportunities for Chiesa to get more game time, but a lot will depend on Chiesa as well.

“It’s the World Cup next summer, he might want to be playing more regularly if he is to get back into that Italy fold – it seems right now he’s quite happy with his role.”

Cheisa was linked with a move away throughout the summer, and there was no shortage of interest in him. But he decided to continue at Anfield. However, his decision might come back to haunt him.

Cheisa’s time at Liverpool is over?

While he did score the winner against Bournemouth on matchday 1, the Italian winger has only played 47 minutes of first-team football in the first four games of the season. On top of that, he has been left out of the Champions League squad with 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha preferred to the Italian.

While Arne Slot was optimistic about handing him enough minutes in the league, Alexander Isak’s arrival further complicates the matter, as Chiesa is now further down the pecking order. The Swedish international’s arrival might actually bring an end to the former Juventus star’s time at the club.

While Slot is planning to use him in January when Mohamed Salah will be unavailable because of the African Cup of Nations, Chiesa could actually choose to leave the club before that. With the World Cup coming up next summer, he would want to play regularly to cement his spot in the Italian squad.

As a result, he could push for a move away, and there will certainly be no shortage of takers, as a fully-fit Cheisa is right up there with the best forwards in the world.
