Manchester United never pursued David de Gea this summer

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United did not make any moves to bring David de Gea back to the club this summer, despite a few links.

Manchester United were on the lookout for a new goalkeeper throughout the summer. The board was no longer confident about Andre Onana being their number one going forward, and before they secured the services of Senne Lammens, reports suggested the Red Devils were contemplating re-signing David de Gea.

But, according to Fabrizio Romano via Give Me Sport, the Fiorentina shot-topper was never an option for the Manchester-based giants. While they were desperately looking for a goalkeeper in the final week of the window, the Red Devils never thought about bringing de Gea back to the club.

David de Gea spent 12 years of his career at Old Trafford. He was their undisputed number one throughout. However, the Spaniard’s time at the club ended in the summer of 2023, when both parties could reach a common ground with regard to a potential renewal.

After being without a club for almost a year, the 34-year-old goalkeeper returned to action with Fiorentina, and he has been in red-hot form since. He has been one of the standout performers for the Italian club. The Spanish shot-stopper returned to Old Trafford for a pre-season friendly against his former club earlier in the summer.

Re-signing De Gea was never an option

Following that game, reports started to emerge about a potential return to Old Trafford for David de Gea, as Manchester United were ready to offload Andre Onana. Altay Bayindir, who had started in their initial games, was not convincing enough; as a result, signing a new goalkeeper became a top priority.

The 34-year-old could have been a great short-term solution given his recent form. But since he had signed a new deal until 2028, Manchester United would have had to pay a decent fee to secure his services.

Meanwhile, there were suggestions that de Gea’s contract included a clause allowing him to leave for a nominal fee, but Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that he was never a target for the Red Devils.

When discussing if the possibility of a return was ever on the cards for David de Gea, Romano said, “No, never. It was never an option.”

Despite time running out, Manchester United never considered bringing the Spanish goalkeeper back to the club. They eventually ended up signing Senne Lammens on deadline day from Royal Antwerp to be their new number one, and Andre Onana left the club to join Turkish side Trabzonspor on loan earlier this week.
