Cody Gakpo confirms Bayern Munich summer links
Bayern Munich were interested in acquiring the services of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo in the recently concluded transfer window.
Liverpool star Cody Gakpo was on Bayern Munich’s wishlist for this summer. The Bundesliga champions did hold talks to sign the Dutch international before deciding to go ahead and sign his teammate, Luis Diaz.
While speaking to ESPN, Gakpo confirmed interest from the Bundesliga giants. He said via , “Bayern tried to sign me, there were talks… but in the end, they decided to go for Luis Diaz.”
Gakpo came up the ranks and made a name for himself at PSV Eindhoven before joining the Merseyside club at the start of 2023 in a deal worth €40-50 million. The Dutchman has only gone from strength to strength since joining the Reds, and his performances have not gone unnoticed.
Despite having more of a rotational role last season and racking up just over 2,600 minutes in his 49 outings, Gakpo was one of the standout performers for Arne Slot’s team. He found the back of the net on 18 occasions and also bagged seven assists.
Bayern Munich were interested in Gakpo
On the back of his performances, Bayern Munich knocked on the doors to sign the 26-year-old, who is equally effective in the number nine role as well as out wide on the left flank. The German giants were desperately looking for a new winger, and they held talks with the Dutch forward.
However, things did not go according to plan, and they eventually ended up signing his teammate, Luis Diaz. Following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and the departure of Diaz, Gakpo has become a prominent figure at the Merseyside club.
The Netherlands international has played every minute of the first four games of the season, and he has three goal contributions. Since he was on relatively low wages, the Reds have handed him a new deal with a significant pay hike. The 26-year-old has already put pen to paper and extended his stay at the club until 2030.
Liverpool would have been pleased to secure Gakpo’s stay at the club, given the kind of start he has had to the new season. With his prime years ahead, the Merseyside club is hoping he takes his game to the next level.
