Joe Gomez set for Liverpool stay amid AC Milan links
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been heavily linked with AC Milan this summer, but the Serie A giants have failed in their pursuit of the player.
According to a report from The Athletic, Liverpool have decided to keep Joe Gomez at the club beyond the summer transfer window. The 28-year-old has been an exceptional player for the Merseyside outfit, and losing him would have been a blow for them at this stage of the window.
The Reds will be hoping to do well in multiple competitions, and they need players like Gomez, who can slot into multiple roles and help the team improve. Milan need defensive quality, and Gomez would have been an excellent addition for them. The Englishman is at the peak of his career, and he could have improved them immensely.
Meanwhile, the player would have fancied the opportunity to join one of the biggest clubs in Europe as well. He needs to play regularly at this stage of his career, and Liverpool will not be able to provide him with that opportunity. Recent reports suggested personal terms were not an issue for the English international.
Liverpool need to keep Gomez
Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are the only other senior central defenders at the club right now. Keeping Joe Gomez at the club makes a lot of sense. Although Liverpool are expected to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, they have not managed to get the deal across the line so far.
Letting Gomez leave the club would have been a gamble for Liverpool. It will be interesting to see if the 28-year-old can get over his injury problems and force his way into the starting lineup this season. There is no doubt that he is one of the best defenders in the league when he’s on form.
If the English utility man can stay fit, he will have every chance of pushing the likes of Konate for the starting spot. The competition for places will help Liverpool improve as a team. Liverpool will be hoping to defend their Premier League crown this season. They will look to do well in the UEFA Champions League as well. Players like Gomez proved to be extremely effective during injuries and rotation this season.
