Manchester United line up £40 million move for Emiliano Martinez

Manchester United will reportedly look to sign 32-year-old Argentine international Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa in the final hours of the summer transfer window.

According to a report by the Daily Mirror, Emiliano Martinez is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a goalkeeper before the summer transfer window shuts down. So, the Aston Villa shot-stopper has emerged as a target.

The struggling Premier League giants are lining up a bid worth £40 million to sign the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner. Meanwhile, reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that with Martinez striking an agreement on personal terms with Manchester United, a departure may be on the cards, with Unai Emery excluding him from the matchday squad for the game against Crystal Palace.

Emiliano Martinez and his time at Aston Villa so far

Emiliano Martinez has established himself as one of the most revered goalkeepers in the world since joining Aston Villa from Arsenal in September 2020. The 32-year-old has made significant progress in the last half a decade, becoming a mainstay between the sticks for his club and country.

The Argentine international has made over 200 appearances thus far for Aston Villa while keeping 70 clean sheets and conceding 257 goals. However, Martinez may have played his final game for the West Midlands club, with Unai Emery excluding him from the matchday squad for the Premier League against Crystal Palace. The situation has arisen after Manchester United’s emerging links with the player.

Move across the Premier League on the cards?

Manchester United’s renewed interest in Emiliano Martinez is understandable. While the Red Devils were keen on securing the former Arsenal goalkeeper’s services earlier this summer, his £200,000-a-week wages forced them to look elsewhere. However, with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir struggling in their first few games of the 2025/26 season, Manchester United will aim to sign a goalkeeper in the final hours of the summer transfer window.

Martinez has thus emerged as a viable target for Manchester United, and they have recently submitted an enquiry over a possible move. Personal terms do not pose an issue for either party, as they have struck an agreement. Meanwhile, Manchester United may submit a bid worth £40 million to sign the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner this summer.

With the 32-year-old Argentine international not playing against Crystal Palace, a late move may be on the cards. Meanwhile, Aston Villa will likely sign a replacement, with recent reports linking the West Midlands outfit with Diogo Costa.
