AC Milan table bid to sign Joe Gomez, Crystal Palace explore move
AC Milan and Crystal Palace are reportedly keen on signing 28-year-old English international Joe Gomez from Liverpool before the summer transfer window shuts down.
According to an update by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Joe Gomez is the subject of interest from AC Milan. The Serie A giants are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the final days of the summer transfer window. So, the 28-year-old Liverpool defender has emerged as a target for the Rossoneri.
The Italian heavyweights have submitted a bid to sign the Englishman on a permanent deal. The Liverpool utility man is also a target for Crystal Palace, with a report by the BBC claiming that the Eagles are exploring a late loan move for the versatile defender as a sweetener in the deal to sell Marc Guehi to the Merseyside club.
Joe Gomez and his Liverpool rollercoaster
Joe Gomez has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in July 2015. While the London native has been reliable at the back for the Merseyside club, his fitness issues have also frustrated Liverpool fans and managers. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old defender’s ability to play across the backline has made him a utility man for Liverpool.
The issues have resurfaced in the early days of the 2025/26 season, with the English international managing only 18 minutes of game time in the first month of the campaign. However, Gomez’s stock in the market is high, with AC Milan and Crystal Palace among the prospective suitors vying for his signature late in the summer transfer window.
A man in demand
AC Milan’s interest in Joe Gomez is understandable. The Rossoneri will aim to end the summer transfer window by signing a centre-back after allowing Malick Thiaw to join Newcastle United. The Liverpool utility man has emerged as a viable target for AC Milan, and the Serie A giants have submitted a bid to secure his services.
As for Crystal Palace, the Eagles are in a spot of bother over Marc Guehi’s long-term future, with the former Chelsea whizkid coincidentally a target for Liverpool. The 2024/25 FA Cup winners are exploring a loan move for the 28-year-old Englishman as part of the deal to sell Guehi to the Merseyside outfit.
However, the Reds are not willing to consider a loan exit for Gomez, meaning a move to AC Milan may be likelier. But while AC Milan may have the advantage in the battle for the English defender’s signature, it will only materialise once Guehi joins Liverpool, which depends on Crystal Palace landing a replacement for the skipper, as per Fabrizio Romano.
