Aston Villa in direct talks to sign Marco Asensio

Aston Villa are in direct talks with PSG to re-sign Marco Asensio, with the attacker only available on a permanent deal owing to his contractual situation.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa are closing in on bringing Marco Asensio back to the club and are currently in direct talks with PSG. The Premier League club have been informed that the Spaniard is only available on a permanent transfer as he has already entered the final year of his deal with the Parisians.

Marco Asensio found a solution in Aston Villa back in January as he was phased out of the PSG project under Luis Enrique. Over in Birmingham, Unai Emery was forced to make changes to his squad midway through the season to help the club comply with PSR concerns that saw the likes of Jhon Duran sold for profit.

Emery’s side responded by signing Marcus Rashford and Asensio on loan to help with their Champions League campaign and a push for a top-five place. Neither of them succeeded, as the club initially did not have plans to re-sign both those stars.

However, they had returned for Asensio over the recent period, and it appears there’s positive movement on that front. Aston Villa had ramped up efforts to re-sign the Spaniard, and are currently in direct talks with PSG to find a resolution.

PSG have informed Aston Villa that Asensio could only leave on loan, considering the versatile playmaker has entered the final year of his deal at the Parisian club. Aston Villa were expected to make a bid to test PSG’s resolve on the player, with many points currently indicating that they will get the deal over the line.

Marco Asensio is a key signing for Aston Villa

The spell between January and June was Asensio’s first taste of English football, and he did a decent job by scoring eight goals across all competitions for Aston Villa. The Spaniard packs the right experience and knows Emery’s system well, so he will be a key signing for the club.

Aston Villa were once again forced to sell one of their top talents for PSR concerns, as Jacob Ramsey joined Newcastle United. Asensio’s arrival will boost Emery’s attacking options, as Leon Bailey has also departed the club to join Roma. Overall, the versatile playmaker will have an important place in the setup, as Aston Villa will hope he helps them in their quest to finish in a top-four place as well as in their Europa League campaign.
