Newcastle United rival Tottenham in Alexander Sorloth chase
Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly battle it out for Alexander Sorloth in the summer transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur’s hunt for attacking reinforcements has taken another twist, with Spanish outlet Fichajes confirming that Newcastle United have now joined Spurs in the race for Alexander Sorloth.
The Norwegian forward, fresh off the back of a 24-goal season for Atletico Madrid, has told the club he no longer wants to play a secondary role under Diego Simeone. Despite his prolific numbers, Sorloth feels he is not a key part of the Atleti attack, especially with Antoine Griezmann, Julian Alvarez, and Giacomo Raspadori all seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order.
Spurs’ need for attacking reinforcements
For Tottenham, Sorloth represents exactly the kind of forward who could add another dimension to Thomas Frank’s squad. With Son Heung-min now in MLS and James Maddison sidelined long-term, Spurs are determined to bring in another proven goalscorer before the window closes.
Sorloth is not just prolific, but he is also built for the Premier League. At 6ft 5in, he is strong in the air, works tirelessly, and thrives at pinning defenders inside the box, qualities that Frank values highly in his system. Sources in Spain suggest Atleti would accept an offer in the region of €35 million, provided they can line up a replacement.
Late push by Newcastle United to sign Alexander Sorloth
Newcastle United, however, have now emerged as direct competition. Eddie Howe is desperate to bolster his forward line after a frustrating summer window and believes Sorloth’s physical style is tailor-made for the Premier League. The Magpies see him as the perfect partner or replacement for Alexander Isak.
This sets up a fascinating head-to-head battle between Tottenham and Newcastle United, two clubs with European ambitions who know they need more goals in their squads.
For Atletico Madrid, Sprloth’s situation is tricky. On the one hand, they are reluctant to lose a striker who delivered over 20 goals last season. On the other, they risk keeping an unhappy player in the squad, something that could disrupt Simeone’s plans. With Napoli also monitoring developments, the pressure is mounting on the Spanish giants to make a decision quickly.
Tottenham will feel this is an opportunity they cannot afford to miss. Sorloth offers experience, goals, and a proven record in European football, an ideal addition to Frank’s system and a natural replacement for the firepower lost with Son’s departure.
With the clock ticking down towards deadline day, Tottenham must now decide how aggressively they want to push ahead of Newcastle United in what could be one of the defining transfer battles of their summer.
