Tottenham prioritising Morgan Rogers move, deal complicated
Tottenham are prioritising a move for Morgan Rogers after missing out on Eberechi Eze, but any deal for the Aston Villa star seems extremely complicated.
According to The Independent, Tottenham could prioritise a move for Morgan Rogers after missing out on another key target. The north Londoners are intent on adding to the attack following James Maddison’s injury, but any move for the Aston Villa star already seems very much complicated.
The last 24 hours have n ot been kind to Tottenham and their fans after losing out on their most important target of this summer window. Spurs have been in the market for an attacking midfielder and have already missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White earlier amid controversial circumstances.
However, on Wednesday, they were in for a shock, as Arsenal swooped in late to hijack the move for Eberechi Eze. The Crystal Palace star is now set to join the Gunners, which does leave Spurs in a bit of a desperate state to find cover for the injured James Maddison.
They had already earmarked Morgan Rogers as a key alternative to Eze, and now they could look to prioritise a move for the Aston Villa mainstay. Spurs have already contacted through intermediaries, although there are plenty of problems ahead if they were to target the England international.
The most obvious hurdle is the price point, with Aston Villa demanding at least £80 million to sell the player, and when negotiations begin, the range could be even higher, as per the report. Spurs are in a position to spend, although they are not known to pay more than necessary, and the price is not the only issue.
Aston Villa keen to keep Morgan Rogers
Rogers’ departure is less likely after Jacob Ramsey’s exit, as Aston Villa cannot afford to lose another one of their top performers with the limited time left in the window. However, the report highlights key PSR-related issues with the club, which continues to trouble their financial books, and could be one big reason they might sanction a sale.
However, there was also talk of a new contract for Rogers, who already remains tied until 2030 with his current deal. Hence, given all the circumstances, Spurs may be interested, but getting a deal at this stage of the window for the £80 million-rated Aston Villa mainstay seems less likely.
