AS Roma secure verbal agreement to sign Leon Bailey
Italian giants AS Roma have a verbal agreement in place with Aston Villa to sign Jamaican winger Leon Bailey.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Leon Bailey is all set to join AS Roma in the coming days as the Italian giants have secured an agreement with Aston Villa. Both clubs have a verbal agreement in place over a loan deal with a buy option.
Bailey made a name for himself at Bayer Leverkusen before joining Villa in the summer of 2021. He was an integral part of their first team in the initial years, but of late, things haven’t really gone according to plan for him.
He had a few injury concerns last season and was more of a rotational option for Unai Emery. While he was involved in 38 matches, he racked up just over 2,000 minutes of first-team action and only contributed towards six goals.
On the back of his struggles last season, there has been a lot of talk about his future. Emery no longer counts on him; as a result, Villa have been open to a potential transfer despite him having two years left on his deal. Even the player has been keen on making a move away in search of a more prominent role.
AS Roma have struck a deal for Bailey
AS Roma have been keeping a close eye on his situation. They sensed an opportunity and stepped up their pursuit. The player has been keen on joining them since the start, which has certainly been a boost for the Italian outfit.
After long-drawn negotiations with Villa, they have managed to strike a deal. Roma have a verbal agreement in place with the Birmingham-based club over a loan deal. They will be paying €2/3 million as a loan fee and will have a buy option worth €22 million.
While multiple top clubs were keen on his signature, Bailey had Roma as his priority option. With the deal now agreed in principle and personal terms not a problem, the Jamaican international is expected to soon get authorisation to travel to Rome for his medical.
