Viktor Gyokeres tipped to flop at Arsenal by Troy Deeney
Arsenal signed Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP during the summer transfer window, but former Premier League striker Troy Deeney believes that the Swedish International will struggle in the Premier League.
In his column with The Sun, he wrote that the player will not score as many goals for Arsenal as people think. He also added that the striker has been instantly put on a pedestal, but fans do not realise the difference between playing in Portugal and England.
There is no doubt that the 27-year-old was a prolific striker during his time in Portugal, and Deeney has admitted that his numbers are up there with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. However, things are a lot different in England, and Arsenal are unlikely to dominate the ball as much as Sporting CP in Portugal.
Deeney also believes that the shirt is weighing heavier than at Sporting, and the huge expectations at Arsenal could make it difficult for the player.
The former Premier League striker also feels that Gyokeres is unlikely to outscore the lights of Erling Haaland or Mohamed Salah, or Alexander Isak this season.
: “Gyokeres will score goals and is a really good player. He will grab a couple of hat-tricks against the lesser teams like Leeds or Wolves. But in the big moments, does he score at Anfield? I’m not sure.
“And the fact that they took so long to get Gyokeres over the line, the fact they also flirted with Benjamin Sesko, that has set off alarm bells for me. Why didn’t Arsenal just go: “Bang, here’s the money you want. He’s our guy.”? Is it because they weren’t sure he was the answer, the missing piece?
“You didn’t hear any of this hesitation when they paid £105million for Declan Rice. Because they knew he was the one. Gyokeres even had to force the move a bit himself.”
Can Gyokeres silence the doubters?
It will be interesting to see if the player can prove his critics wrong in the coming weeks. He’s at the peak of his career, and he has proven himself to be a reliable scorer in Portugal. It will be interesting to see if he can adapt to the step up to the Premier League a find the back of the net consistently.
Arsenal will certainly hope that he can help them win major trophies this season. They have struggled in the absence of a reliable striker, and they will feel that the Swedish Internation could be the solution to their problems.
