Manchester United considering surprise David de Gea move

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are considering bringing David de Gea back to the club in a surprise move.

According to a report from The Sun, David de Gea could end up making a surprise return to Old Trafford this summer. Manchester United are considering making a move for their former number one as Ruben Amorim seeks a more reliable shot-stopper going forward.

De Gea has been a part of the United setup for well over a decade after joining them back in 2011. He went on to make over 500 appearances for their first team. While he was an undisputed starter for them for the majority of his time at the club, a dip in form and dispute over a potential new deal led to his departure in 2023.

De Gea has bounced back in some fashion

He ended up being without a club for an entire season before making a return to football with Fiorentina last summer. The 34-year-old had an exceptional debut campaign at the Italian club, and his performances suggested he still has a lot of football left in him.

De Gea recently returned to Old Trafford for the first team since he left to face his former club in a pre-season friendly. His performance seems to have impressed Amorim, who is looking for a new shot-stopper, as Andre Onana hasn’t been convincing enough since joining the Red Devils from Inter Milan for £43.8 million.

While he was brought in to replace De Gea, the Cameroonian international hasn’t lived up to the expectations. Amorim started Altay Bayindir in their opening league fixture against Arsenal, which suggests Onana is no longer the preferred choice in goal.

United could push to re-sign De Gea

United have been looking for a new goalkeeper all summer, and are now considering bringing back their former number one. The Red Devils are secretly exploring the possibility of re-signing him after they were tipped off that he has a clause in his Fiorentina contract allowing him to leave for a relatively low fee.

They have made calls to learn more about a potential transfer days after De Gea made a cryptic post where he told United fans that their paths may cross again. The Spanish international could certainly bolster the goalkeeping position, but the Manchester-based giants might have to sell Onana or Bayindir to make room for his signing.
