Bayern Munich in talks to sign Christopher Nkunku

Bayern Munich are reportedly in talks to land wantaway Chelsea attacker Christopher Nkunku this summer.

Bayern Munich have opened discussions with Chelsea over a possible deal for Christopher Nkunku, with the Bundesliga champions keen to bring the Frenchman back to the Bundesliga.

According to the Daily Mail, Bayern Munich would prefer an initial loan deal with an option or obligation to buy, though negotiations with Chelsea are still at an early stage.

Chelsea ready to sanction Christopher Nkunku exit

Christopher Nkunku joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2023 for £52.7 million, but injuries and inconsistency have meant he has yet to establish himself as a regular under Enzo Maresca. The 27-year-old now finds himself lower down the pecking order following the arrivals of Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, and Estevao Willian this summer.

With Chelsea also targeting Xavi Simons of RB Leipzig and Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United, the Blues appear willing to sanction Nkunku’s departure just two years into his six-year contract. Maresca had already hinted in June that the Frenchman could move on, suggesting the forward was not guaranteed to be part of his long-term plans.

A new look Bayern Munich wing roster

Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Christopher Nkunku comes at a time of major change in their forward line. The Bavarians have already signed Luis Díaz from Liverpool, adding directness and flair on the wing. However, they have also lost both Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman, leaving Vincent Kompany eager to strengthen his wide options further.

Nkunku’s versatility, able to play as a second striker, attacking midfielder, or winger, makes him an attractive target. Having already thrived in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, scoring 70 goals and providing 56 assists in 172 games, Bayern Munich know he could adapt seamlessly.

For Chelsea, letting Nkunku go would free up squad space and wages while helping to fund big-money moves for younger attacking talents. The Blues’ recruitment under Maresca has been focused on reshaping the attack around dynamic, emerging players rather than relying on older signings.

For Bayern Munich, the addition of Nkunku would provide a proven Bundesliga star with Champions League pedigree to slot in alongside Diaz, Jamal Musiala, and Harry Kane. It would also soften the blow of losing Sane and Coman in the same summer.

With the transfer window entering its final weeks, the talks are expected to accelerate. Whether Chelsea opt for a straight loan or push for a permanent sale, Nkunku’s time at Stamford Bridge looks increasingly uncertain.
