Liverpool revive move for Marc Guehi
Liverpool have revived their pursuit of Crystal Palace defensive mainstay Marc Guehi heading into the final weeks of the transfer window.
Having made significant additions to their attack, Liverpool are now focused on reinforcing their backline before the end of the transfer window. Arne Slot wants more options in the heart of the defence. The Reds have already completed the signing of Giovanni Leoni and are now keen on securing the services of Marc Guehi.
The English international has done wonders for both club and country in recent years. He is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and Slot is keen on having him in his squad. According to a report from CaughtOffside, the Reds haven’t given up on their pursuit. They are set to reopen talks with Palace as they look to strike a deal before the deadline.
Guehi is keen on making the move to the Merseyside club, but there is a significant difference in valuation between the two clubs. While he only has a year left on his deal and could be available for free next summer, the Eagles still want £45-50 million to sanction his departure this summer.
Meanwhile, the Reds are only willing to fork out close to £35-40 million. However, they are now looking to step up their pursuit of his signature. They are hoping Oliver Glasner’s team will lower their demands.
Another report from Football Insider suggests Palace want £40 million for the 25-year-old, while Liverpool do not want to spend in excess of £35 million. As a result, talks have been on a standstill for a while.
Peter O’Rourke’s take on Liverpool’s pursuit of Guehi
However, Peter O’Rourke believes Liverpool have reopened talks to see if they can strike a deal before the end of the window.
While speaking to Football Insider, the transfer expert said: “It’s an ongoing situation, the Liverpool interest in Marc Guehi, and there have been more developments”,
“The latest information I have today is that Liverpool have reopened talks with Palace to see if a deal can be done before the close of the window.
“The two clubs are slightly apart in valuations; Liverpool think that he should be cheaper than £40million, which Palace are holding out for with the player in the final year of his contract.
“Palace don’t want to lose their captain and star defender on the cheap, they think he’s worth that £40million.
“Liverpool are negotiating, trying to get that figure down to maybe around the £30–35million mark, and talks are ongoing between the two clubs.”
Liverpool remain keen on signing Guehi
Since Guehi could choose to run down his contract and leave for free in 12 months, Liverpool are hoping Palace will lower their demands. However, the Eagles are unwilling to part with their captain for a cut-price fee, as finding a suitable replacement would be far from straightforward.
They appear prepared to risk losing him for nothing rather than accept an offer in the region of £35 million. Meanwhile, the Reds see him as an ideal long-term replacement for Ibrahima Konate, whose future remains uncertain with his contract expiring next summer. Securing Guehi this summer would be the perfect outcome for them.
