Arsenal abandon their pursuit of Eberechi Eze
Tottenham have received a massive boost in their pursuit of Eberechi Eze as rivals Arsenal have pulled out of the race.
According to Graeme Bailey via TBR, Arsenal won’t be making a move for Eberechi Eze. While Mikel Arteta’s team have a long-standing interest in the Crystal Palace attacking sensation, the Gunners have opted out of the race. It has significantly bolstered rivals Tottenham’s chances of securing his services.
Eze hasn’t looked back since joining the Eagles back in 2020 from QPR. He has not only established himself as one of their mainstays, but the 27-year-old is also widely regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League.
His impressive performances have put him on the radar of multiple top clubs. While Palace managed to hold onto him last summer, they will struggle to do the same this time around, as he only has two years left on his contract. Owner Steve Parish is ready to sanction his departure as long as their asking price of over £60 million is met.
Arsenal are no longer keen on signing Eze
Tottenham and Arsenal have both been linked with him since the start of the window. While the two North London clubs were initially ready to battle it out for his signature, the Gunners have pulled out of the race, as they view Eze as an out-and-out number ten and are instead focused on strengthening the left flank.
While speaking to TBR about Eze’s future, Bailey said, “Eze is a tricky one. Steve Parish is asking well over £60 million, which is a difficult price. Arsenal liked the player, but that move seems to be off for now.
“Some people think Spurs might consider him too expensive, but I suspect they’ll try. They’ve paid that sort of money before, and I think Spurs will come in for him and probably get him.
“Unlike Arsenal, who always viewed Eze as a number 10 rather than a solution for the left-hand side, Tottenham see him as someone who can play on the left. That flexibility is likely to push Spurs to make a move in the coming days.
“Meanwhile, Arsenal are expected to focus on strengthening the left-hand side rather than pursuing someone they see primarily as a number 10. They are unlikely but not completely impossible to make a move for Eze at this point.”
Spurs in pole position to sign Eze?
The Gunners no longer see Eze as a priority target. They already have Martin Odegaard, Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman for the number ten role and are looking for a new left-winger instead as they seek an upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
With Arsenal giving up on their pursuit of Eze, Spurs have received a massive boost. Thomas Frank’s team needs a new number ten as James Maddison has picked up a serious injury and will be out for a while. The Palace star could certainly help their cause.
While the asking price appears slightly high for Daniel Levy’s side, Bailey believes they could still look to strike a deal with Parish. Unlike Arsenal, Spurs view him as an option to strengthen the left flank following Son Heung-min’s departure, while also providing cover for Maddison in the meantime.
